The Sugar Diaries: Day 14

8:30am Awake for proper breakfast and coffee before going to the dentist. Woe is me.

1pm Eat a homemade salad at university. The salad consists of spinach, cherry tomatoes, beans of various varieties and falafel. It’s yummy. Teeth hurt too much from the dentist to eat my apple.

3pm Flat white, but I get it for 45p so I think this is ok.

4pm Housemate has made sprout gratin. Sounds gross but is yum.

5pm Am invited to friend’s for belated pancakes. Look up a recipe for a sugar free, wholemeal version. It doesn’t look especially appetising. I think about feeling glum over sad news the past few days. I think about the two distinctions I just received in my assignments. I think about the two internships I was accepted for. I think about the 1,000 subscribers I’ve just received on YouTube. I think about flipping pancakes. I think about the fact that it is Valentine’s Day. I think about lemony, sugary goodness. I think about going out in the freezing rain to buy wholemeal flour. Oh, sod it.

10pm Arrive home full of three pancakes and a glass and a half of wine. Feel thoroughly pleased with my decision and have cheered up substantially. Make a cup of tea and go to bed feeling content.

Notes: Cravings are not a huge problem for me at the moment, but I’ve definitely noticed that I crave sugar more when I’m hungry, sad or tired. Not having comfort food is an odd thing. I have also re-read my Sugar Diary entries and bloody hell, I didn’t realise that I drink basically every day. Not good.

The Sugar Diaries: Day 13

8:30am Wake up. I have a metric shitton of things to do today, so naturally I go back to sleep.

10:30am Breakfast. Proper coffee. Best time of the day. Yum.

1pm Housemate comes into the kitchen where I have been installed for the past 2 and a half hours reading Publishers’ Prize submissions. She makes an amazing hearty lunch of pork curry, mashed potatoes and sprouts. Feel like I’ve recovered from a cold that I didn’t even have.

3pm Revitalised, I clean my room, change my bed, do my washing and finish reading and marking submissions. After a sad few days, I get hit with a triple whammy of good news – another acceptance for a work placement and good marks on two assignments. It’s like the universe is trying to apologise for aforementioned bad news.

6pm Feel very sad. It’s the first time so far that I seriously consider breaking this stupid sugar fast and packing it all in – I’m thinking specifically of a white chocolate chip Sainsbury’s cookie that would definitely make me feel better for ten minutes. I only just resist, and mostly because I can’t be arsed to walk to Sainsbury’s.

8pm Galentine’s day at friend’s house. I take carrot sticks and hummus again because I am boring. We have alcohol-free wine (which doesn’t list sugar as an ingredient but it’s so sweet that it must have some in). I also take brown pasta and friend makes us a veggie pesto pasta bake. It’s heavenly.

The Sugar Diaries: Day 12

12:30pm It’s been 4 and a half hours since I woke up and I’ve already walked 3 miles before I eat anything today. Despite what I said yesterday about buying coffee, I have a latte, an apple and some salted almonds on the train home.

1:30pm Quick trip to the shops because I’m running low on oatcakes.

2pm Happily munching on a ham and cheese sandwich (it said malted bread and it looks brown – does that count?) when I hear my mum’s voice in my head – where are your vegetables? 

6:30pm At an LGBT+ variety show. There is free wine so I have 2 glasses of red. I also eat quite a lot of olives and some salted crisps which my friends complain about being quite ‘plain’ but I enjoy.

12am Ravenous on the bus home. Eat a packet of oatcakes, and a bowl of shredded wheat with blueberries when I get in. Where are your vegetables? 

Note: I reserve the right to retract this comment, but my sugar cravings have pretty much gone at this point (though I sometimes still want white carbs). It’s more a case of wanting to join in with everyone else or not wanting to read the label that’s making me want to just have sugar. I could probably do with getting a bit more creative with my dinner recipes as well, but then we have all always known that.
